In part because I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, however, I also teach (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) I have been a student of the liberal arts curriculum from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) It is my belief that education should integrate studies in art along with different subjects. It's not surprising that an ethnomusicologist holding a PhD and MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. The ethnomusicology course, which began at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in an music department within the College of Letters and Science. I like pursuing multiple pursuits and seeing the big image. It's great to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am the writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. I also have times where I'm primarily a professor and other periods in which I perform administrative duties (such as the Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science, 1994-1998).
